A voltage transformer (VT), historically called a potential transformer (PT), scales a high system voltage down to a standardized low-voltage signal — typically 120 V — so meters, relays, and monitoring equipment can measure it without being exposed to the primary. Unlike a power transformer, the job is not to deliver energy but to reproduce the primary waveform faithfully at the burden it actually sees.

We wind VTs up to 35 kV primary with 120 V secondaries and custom ratios, in metering (0.3) and protection classes, at 50 or 60 Hz, with the rated burden your instrumentation requires. Our engineers spec insulation system, ratio, and burden for free, and every unit is individually ratio-tested and hipot-verified before it ships, not batch-sampled.

Voltage / Potential Transformers

None — they are two names for the same device. "Potential transformer" (PT) is the older North American term and "voltage transformer" (VT) is the modern IEC-aligned one. Both describe an instrument transformer that scales system voltage down to a standard measurable level, usually 120 V.
A power transformer is built to deliver energy efficiently. A VT is built to reproduce voltage accurately at a defined burden — its rating is expressed as an accuracy class at a rated VA, not as a power capability. Loading a VT beyond its rated burden degrades accuracy long before it causes any thermal problem.
Add up the VA drawn by everything connected to the secondary — meters, relays, transducers, and the secondary wiring itself — and specify the next standard burden above it. Under-loading is fine; exceeding the rated burden pushes the unit out of its accuracy class. Tell us what you are connecting and we will size it.
